Are you a new EMT or Emergency Medical Technician Basic and entering the field? Have you struggled taking vital signs, (Pulse, Blood Pressure, Respiratory Rate) during chaotic or loud scenes? There are ways to improve your ability to focus in the moment and get those vitals every time.

There are two components to upping your vitals game: Getting your mind right and improving your technique.

-Getting your Mind Right:

-Start each day with a 2, 5, or 10 minute meditation. This will improve your ability to focus when external stressors are nagging you.

-Strike a power pose to increase your presence and confidence with the pressure is on.

-Do a mindfulness exercise when you feel the anxiety rising in you. It will focus your mind, lower your anxiety, and allow you to perform better on the task at hand.

-Improve your technique:

-Find the radial pulse every time with simple anatomical tips.

-Find the blood pressure every time with technique and good placement.

-Capture that respiratory rate every time.

If you implement some or all of these tips, you will perform better during chaotic scenes and improve the outcome for your patient. It is that simple.
