Are you a firefighter looking to act lieutenant or promote to an officer position? How comfortable are you commanding the first 5-10 minutes of a structure fire? When you sit in the front seat, everything is on you to perform and guide all incoming units and your crew. What is more, it is your responsibility to ensure everyone stays safe. A poor scene size up could result in injuries to civilians and firefighters alike.

Does that make you nervous? Butterflies in your stomach? Stressed? It would be weird if you didn’t feel nervous, stressed or have feelings of anxiety.

How do you harness those nerves and manage that scene like an old pro? You can conquer that stress and strategically guide the tactics and tasks to set everyone on that structure fire up for success. You do this by getting your mind right.

-Meditate daily. Even just 2 minutes will make a world of difference.

-Rehearse structure fires in your head. Mental rehearsal will give you the reps needed to feel more confident when facing the real thing.

-When the call drops, do a mindfulness exercise to calm your nerves.

-Plan what you are going to say on the radio before you say it.

-Talk and act in a calm, confident, poised tone. This will matriculate to everyone on the scene.
